So, I had this idea to make an aurora-themed wedding gown. I just think the northern lights are super pretty, and wouldn’t it be cool to have a dress that looks like that? I started looking around to see what I could find that was similar.
I started by sketching out some ideas. I mean, how hard could it be, right? Turns out, pretty hard. I’m no fashion designer, but I gave it my best shot. I drew a bunch of dresses, trying to capture that flowy, ethereal vibe of the aurora. Then, I went online to see what kind of fabrics I could use. I found some sheer, shimmery materials that looked promising, but I wasn’t sure how to make them look like the northern lights.
I decided to try dyeing some fabric. I got some white silk and some fabric dyes in different shades of blue, green, and purple. I followed some tutorials online and, well, let’s just say it didn’t go as planned. The colors ended up muddy and uneven. My kitchen looked like a rainbow had exploded. I tried using some glitter spray, but that just made it look like a disco ball exploded, too. Still, I figured, keep at it, right?
- Sketched some designs.
- Looked for fabrics online.
- Tried dyeing fabric (failed).
- Considered using glitter spray(it was a mess).
Steps I took:
Then, I stumbled upon this technique where you can layer different colors of sheer fabric to create a gradient effect. I bought a bunch of different colored tulle and organza and started experimenting. I layered them, pinned them, and sewed them together. It was a lot of trial and error, but I finally got something that resembled the aurora! It was not easy.
Next, I started working on the actual dress. I used a simple, flowy pattern as a base and added the layered fabric on top. It took forever to sew all those layers together, and my fingers were sore from all the pinning, but it was worth it. The dress started to take shape, and it actually looked pretty good! I added some silver glitter accents to mimic the stars, and I think it turned out pretty magical.
I wore the dress to a party, and everyone loved it! They couldn’t believe I made it myself. It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely unique. And you know what? I learned a lot in the process. Not just about sewing, but also about perseverance. If you have a vision, don’t give up on it! Even if it seems impossible at first. Just keep trying, and you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve. So, yeah, that’s the story of my aurora wedding gown. It was a wild ride, but I’m so glad I did it.
And also the dress looked awesome with the one shoulder long dress. So I will definitely wear this style of dress in the future, maybe not the aurora one though, just the normal one.
Oh, one more thing, I also made some personalized wedding favors for my friends who came to the party. They were just small tokens, but everyone seemed to appreciate them. I guess it’s the little things that count, right?
