Okay, so, my best friend asked me to be her bridesmaid, and I was like, “Heck yeah!” But then came the tricky part – figuring out what to do with my hair. I’m Asian, and sometimes it feels like all the hairstyle inspo out there is for, well, not Asian hair.
So, I started by hitting up Pinterest. I typed in “bridesmaid hair Asian” and, let me tell you, it was a goldmine! I found tons of ideas, from elegant updos to pretty, flowy styles. I saved a bunch of pins that I thought would look good with my face shape and the dress I’m wearing.
Then, I started experimenting. I tried out a few different updos first. I grabbed my hair ties, bobby pins, and hairspray, and just went for it. I watched some videos. Some turned out okay, others… not so much. Let’s just say I’m not a natural hairstylist!
- Romantic Side Updo: This one was actually pretty easy to do, and it looked really soft and romantic. I think I might actually be able to pull this one off on the big day.
- Half-Up, Half-Down: This is a classic for a reason. I played around with different ways to braid or twist the top half of my hair. I liked a few, especially one with a little waterfall braid.
- Low Bun: I always think low buns look so chic, but my hair can be a little slippery, so I had to use a lot of bobby pins to keep it in place. I tested a few styles, one with some loose strands around my face, and another one that was more sleek and pulled back.
My List:
After a few (okay, maybe more than a few) failed attempts, I decided to consult my friend, the bride. After all, it’s her wedding, and I want to make sure she’s happy with how we all look. I showed her the styles I was considering, and she helped me narrow it down.
We decided to do a hair trial with the actual hairstylist who will be doing our hair for the wedding. I brought all my Pinterest photos, and the hairstylist gave me some great advice. She showed me some other styles that would work well with my hair type and the overall vibe of the wedding. It was super helpful to see how the styles would actually look on me and get her professional input.
Finally, after all that trial and error, I think I’ve found the perfect hairstyle! It’s a beautiful updo that’s both elegant and modern. It’s not exactly what I originally had in mind, but I’m so happy with it. It will also probably save me some money since it is traditional for the bride to cover hair and makeup costs, and now I have a clearer idea of what can be done with my hair ahead of time!
If you’re a fellow Asian bridesmaid struggling to find the right hairstyle, don’t give up! There are tons of beautiful options out there. Just keep experimenting, get inspiration from places like Pinterest, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends or a professional hairstylist. You’ll find the perfect look in no time! You’ll have a great time with your friends too while getting ready!
