My granddaughter, she’s gettin’ hitched next spring. She wants all her girls in blue, but not all the same, you know? She calls it “mismatched blue bridesmaid dresses“. Sounds kinda funny to me, but hey, it’s her day. I told her, back in my day, we all wore the same thing, looked like a bunch of peas in a pod. But the kids these days, they like things different. She don’t want same stuff, she like new stuff.
She showed me some pictures on that computer thing. Lots of blue dresses, some light, some dark. Some with long sleeves, some with no sleeves. One girl even had a dress with flowers on it, but still blue, you see. She say she like blue bridesmaid dresses.
- Some dresses are long, all the way to the ground.
- Some are short, above the knee.
- Some got shiny things on ’em, some are plain as day.
She asked me what I thought. I said, “Honey, as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.” But I’ll tell you a secret, I think it looks a little messy. Like they all just grabbed whatever blue thing they could find in their closet. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. But I think mismatched bridesmaid dresses not good.
She also said somethin’ ’bout different shapes of dresses. One girl, she’s a little bigger, she gonna wear a dress that covers her up more. Another girl, she’s skinny as a rail, she gonna wear a dress that shows off her legs. They try to make everyone look good, I guess. But all these different blue bridesmaid dresses, oh my!
They call it “sill-oh-ets” or somethin’ like that. Sounds like a fancy word for different shapes. I just call it different dresses. And they even gonna mix up the, uh, the stuff the dresses are made of. Some will be that shiny stuff, some will be that soft stuff. I don’t know the names, I just know what I like. I like new blue bridesmaid dresses.
- Shiny stuff, they say it’s fancy.
- Soft stuff, they say it’s comfy.
- Flowery stuff, some girls, they sure do like that.
They say it’s trendy now, these mismatched blue bridesmaid dresses. Everyone’s doin’ it. But I still think it looks a little strange. Like they couldn’t decide on one dress, so they just picked a bunch. But it don’t matter, like I said. It’s her wedding, not mine.
My granddaughter, she’s always been one to do things her own way. When she was little, she’d wear her shoes on the wrong feet, just ’cause she liked it. So this whole mismatched dress thing, it don’t surprise me none. If she like mismatched bridesmaid dresses, then I like it.
I remember my wedding day. We all wore the same dress, a pretty pink one with little white flowers. We all looked the same. We didn’t have all these choices back then. Maybe it was simpler that way. But things change, I guess. Young folks like choices.
I told her she should let the girls pick their own dresses, long as they’re blue. That way, everyone’s happy. They can pick a dress they like, a dress they feel good in. And maybe it won’t look so messy after all. Maybe it’ll look kinda pretty, all those different shades of blue together.
- Light blue, like the sky on a clear day.
- Dark blue, like the ocean deep.
- Blue with a little green in it, like those birds we see in the summer.
She’s worried ’bout it lookin’ good in pictures. She wants those pictures to be perfect. I told her, the pictures will be perfect no matter what, ’cause it’s her wedding day. And she’ll be surrounded by all her friends, all dressed in blue, even if it’s mismatched blue bridesmaid dresses. That’s what matters. The people. Not the dresses.
They can add things to the dresses, too. Like a little jacket, or a, uh, a “bowl-arrow” they call it. Sounds like somethin’ you’d eat soup out of. But it’s a little jacket thing. They can wear those if it gets cold. Or if they don’t like their arms showin’. Lots of choices, these girls have.
So, yeah, these mismatched blue bridesmaid dresses, it’s a new thing. It’s different. It’s a little strange to me. But if it makes my granddaughter happy, then I’m happy. That’s all that matters. A happy bride, that’s what we all want. Even if her friends look like they got dressed in the dark, in all different shades of blue. It’ll be a day to remember, that’s for sure.
I still think matching dresses are better. But hey, who am I to say? I’m just happy to be there, to see my granddaughter get married. And I’ll be wearin’ my best dress, too. Maybe I’ll even wear blue, to match the girls. But just one shade of blue, mind you. I ain’t ready for that mismatched stuff just yet, but blue bridesmaid dresses all same is good.
