This here, I tell you, these young’uns getting married, it’s a whole to-do. And what they wear, Lord have mercy! Back in my day, you just wore your Sunday best. But these Indian groom clothes, it’s somethin’ else. All kinds of fancy, you wouldn’t believe.
They got these long coats, they call ’em… Sher-what-knees? Sherwanis! Yeah, that’s it. Like a prince or somethin’. All different colors, too. Seen a bright red one once, looked like a dang firecracker! They got all these shiny things all over ’em.
One time, I saw a groom wearing dark green color, looking like a tree or something. And other guy wearing dark blue, they call it navy. Looked like the night sky. They got so many colors over there, it would make your head spin. Also, the maroon color, like the old curtains my sister Martha had. These are popular colors for grooms.
They got these things they wrap around their necks, like a long scarf. Fancy ones, though. Not like the ones you’d wear to keep warm in the winter. All silky and shiny. Some of them have two, they call it “Double Stole”. Don’t ask me why, I don’t make the rules! They just hang there, lookin’ all important-like. These Indian groom clothes, I tell you, they got a name for everything.
And the pants! Sometimes they’re tight, like those skinny jeans the kids wear these days. Sometimes they’re all loose and flowy, like you could hide a whole watermelon in there. They call ’em different things, “pajamas” or somethin’. Not like the pajamas you sleep in, though. These are special occasion pajamas for Indian wedding.
Then there’s this other thing, they call it a kurta. It is a long shirt, I reckon, goes down past your knees. They wear it with those pajama pants. Sometimes it’s plain, sometimes it’s all fancy like those Sherwanis. The men wear these kurta, they are comfortable. But the sari, it is a long cloth that women wrap around. It is too much trouble for me.
They got all these different outfits for different parts of the wedding, too. It ain’t just one shindig, oh no. It’s like a whole week of parties! They got one for the actual wedding, that’s the real fancy one. Then they got other ones for all the other get-togethers.
One is called a reception, I think. Like a big party after the wedding. They wear different clothes for that, too. Maybe not as fancy as the wedding getup, but still pretty spiffed up. They like to look good, these folks. Always dressing up for something. Not like here, we just wear whatever’s clean!
They even have other clothes for the “casual” events. Not like our casual, where you just throw on some old jeans. These Indian groom clothes for casual events, it’s still pretty fancy. Maybe a shorter Sherwani, or one without all the shiny bits. But still nicer than anything you’d wear to the grocery store, that’s for sure. And the colors! Don’t even get me started on the colors. Not just your regular reds and blues. They got these bright yellows, like the sun. And oranges, like a pumpkin patch. And purples, like them flowers that grow by the creek. Every color you can imagine, they got it over there. And they ain’t afraid to wear ’em, neither. These Indian wedding clothes are bright!
They even got special shoes! Not just your regular work boots, no sir. These are fancy shoes, all pointy-toed and shiny. Some of ’em even curl up at the end, like those elf shoes in the Christmas stories. I don’t know how they walk in ’em, but they do.
And jewelry! Oh, the jewelry. They got necklaces, and bracelets, and rings, you name it. Even the men wear jewelry over there. Not just a wedding band, neither. They got these big, chunky necklaces, and these things they wear on their heads, like a crown, but not a crown. It’s a lot, I tell you. They love their bling, these folks.
You know what else? They cover their heads, too. Not always, but sometimes. They got these turbans, all different colors and styles. Some are tall, some are short, some are wrapped real tight, some are loose. I don’t know what they all mean, but they sure do look fancy. It’s like a whole other language, just with clothes. They use these turbans to choose Indian groom clothes, match the colors, I reckon.
It’s a lot to take in, all these different clothes and customs. But you gotta admire it, I guess. They really go all out for their weddings. It’s a big deal over there. Not like here, where you just throw a party in the backyard and call it a day. No, these Indian weddings, they’re a whole production. And these Indian groom clothes, they’re a big part of it.
So, if you ever get invited to one of these shindigs, just be prepared to see a whole lot of fancy. And don’t be surprised if you don’t know what half of it is called. Just smile and nod, and enjoy the show. And maybe bring some sunglasses, ’cause those colors are bright!
