Okay, here’s my experience with styling my hair down with a veil for my wedding:
So, like many brides, I really struggled with how to wear my hair for the big day. Updo? Half-up? All down? And then, how to make a veil work with it all? I wanted to keep my hair down, flowing and natural, but I also wanted that classic bridal look with a veil. It was a real head-scratcher.
First, I started by experimenting at home. I grabbed a cheap veil from a local store (didn’t want to mess up a fancy one!) and tried different ways to put it on with my hair down. I quickly realized that just sticking it in there wasn’t gonna cut it. It kept slipping, and it looked awkward and messy. I think the veil needs something to grab on to.
Then, I remembered something about using an elastic. I parted my hair in the back, like a small section at the crown. Then, I tied it off with a clear elastic. It felt a bit weird, but I trusted the process. After that, I let the rest of my hair fall over it, hiding the elastic. That way, the crown section of hair hides it, and you can put the veil behind the elastic. I tried putting the veil comb right behind the elastic, and boom! It stayed put! It felt secure, and it looked way better. This makes the veil have something to hold onto, like an updo hairstyle.
Next, I went to my hairstylist for a trial run. I explained what I had done at home, and she was totally on board. She did some magic with styling my hair, curling it into loose waves and all that. Then, she used the elastic trick and added the veil. But, she also added some bobby pins on the sides of the veil for extra security. If your dress has a higher neckline, you might want to consider a similar style. She said it’s a good way to keep the veil from slipping, especially if you’re doing a lot of moving around. Securing the veil into the top of the updo is usually suggested, but the crown also works.
Finally, on the wedding day, everything went smoothly. My hair stayed in place, the veil looked great, and I felt amazing. I was wearing a strapless dress, and the half-up, half-down hairstyle was pretty and feminine, and it showed off my neckline. I danced the night away without worrying about my hair or veil falling apart. It was such a relief! You can also try adding some bridal pins to the side or a comb above so that it overlaps the veil to elevate your hairstyle.
A Summary of My Tips
- Use a clear elastic to create a small anchor point for the veil comb.
- Hide the elastic with the top layer of your hair.
- Add bobby pins for extra security, especially if you’ll be moving a lot.
- Do a trial run with your hairstylist to make sure everything looks and feels right.
- Consider your dress neckline when choosing a hairstyle.
That’s my story of figuring out the whole hair-down-with-a-veil situation. It took some trial and error, but in the end, it was totally worth it. Hopefully, my experience can help some other brides-to-be out there!
