Okay, so, today I wanted to try my hand at something a bit different – making a groom’s flower, you know, the little floral thing that goes on the jacket lapel. I’ve seen these at weddings and always thought they looked pretty sharp, but I never really gave much thought to how they were made. So, I rolled up my sleeves and decided to give it a go myself.
First off, I gathered some stuff I thought I’d need. I didn’t really have a concrete plan, just an idea. I picked up some fresh flowers from the local market. I chose a few small roses and some greenery for filler – nothing too fancy. I also grabbed some floral wire, floral tape, and a pair of scissors. I figured these would be enough to get me started. I also used a buttonhole clip to attach it.
I started by trimming the flowers. I cut the stems of the roses down to about two or three inches, just enough to work with but not too long that they’d be flopping all over the place. Then I took a piece of floral wire and wrapped it around the stem of each rose. This took a bit of practice. I wanted the wire to be tight enough to hold the flowers in place, but not so tight that it would damage the stems. It was a delicate balance, let me tell you.
- Trim the flowers’ stems.
- Wrap floral wire around each stem.
- Add greenery and secure with wire.
- Wrap everything with floral tape.
- Attach a buttonhole clip.
After getting the roses wired up, I added some of the greenery. I just kinda tucked the leaves around the roses, trying to create a balanced look. It was all about eyeballing it and seeing what looked good. Once I was happy with the arrangement, I took another piece of wire and wrapped it around all the stems to hold everything together. This part was a bit tricky. I had to make sure the arrangement stayed in place while also keeping the wire neat and tidy.
With the flowers and greenery all wired up, I moved on to the floral tape. This stuff is pretty cool, it’s stretchy and sticks to itself. I started at the top of the stems and wrapped the tape all the way down, covering the wire completely. This gave the whole thing a nice, clean look and also helped to secure everything in place.
Finishing Touches
Once the taping was done, I took a step back to look at my creation. It was looking pretty good, if I do say so myself. To make it easy to attach to a jacket, I used a buttonhole clip. I simply attached the clip to the back of the floral arrangement.
And there you have it, a homemade groom’s flower. It wasn’t perfect, but I was pretty proud of it. It was a fun little project and definitely something I’d try again. Maybe next time I’ll experiment with different flowers or try to make it even more polished. It is a good way to match the bridesmaid’s flowers and keep the wedding party looking cohesive. But for now, I’m happy to have this one under my belt.
