Well, let me tell you, that lace wedding gown with a long train, it’s a real big deal. Everybody wants one. I seen ’em. They’re pretty, I gotta say. But them things, they ain’t cheap. Not one bit. My granddaughter, she wanted one of them lace wedding gowns. She’s getting married next spring, you know. Said it was her dream. All these girls they dream about these dresses with the long train.
We went down to that fancy shop in the city. Lord have mercy, the prices! Made my head spin. They had all kinds, all sorts of them wedding gowns with long trains. Some with that sparkly stuff, some plain, some with lace all over. That lace, it’s real popular now. Bigger than ever, they say. Seems like it’s back in style again. Everything old is new again, I always say. They had so many dresses. Over 1,500 I heard a lady say!
They had these dresses, they call ’em “designer.” What does that even mean? Sounds fancy. But they sure cost a lot. Over $1,500 for some of ’em! Can you believe that? For a dress you wear once! It’s crazy, I tell ya. But my granddaughter, she had her heart set on it. Said it was important. Said all the other girls got them designer dresses. She wants to look pretty on her big day, which is understandable, I reckon.
Now, back in my day, things were different. We didn’t have all these fancy stores and these “designer” things. We made our own dresses mostly. Or maybe got one from a neighbor. They weren’t always made of lace but they were made with love. We didn’t need all that extra to be beautiful. But times have changed, I suppose. These young folks, they like the fancy stuff.
And who pays for these things? Well, used to be, the bride’s family, they’d pay. That’s just how it was. But now? Who knows. Sometimes the couple, they split it. Sometimes the girl, she pays for it herself. Every family is different, I guess. My granddaughter, she saved up a little. But she didn’t have enough for one of these fancy dresses. I mean she works hard, but it ain’t like she’s rolling in money.
We looked and looked. They had some that weren’t so bad. Still lace wedding gowns, still had that long train. But not as much lace. And not one of them “designer” ones. They were under $1,500, some even under $150! Still a lot, in my opinion. But better than those other ones. I saw one for under $150. It had some lace on it. But you know, simple like. But it’s still pretty.
- You want a lace wedding gown?
- You want that long train?
- You gotta be ready to pay.
- Or find a good sale, maybe.
My granddaughter, she tried on a bunch. She looked like a princess in some of ’em. But that long train, it’s a lot of fabric. She kept tripping over it. Made me chuckle. She’ll have to practice walking in it I guess. It’s a lot to manage, that’s for sure. I told her she better be careful not to rip it. That would be a disaster!
Finally, she found one she liked. It was a lace wedding gown, of course. With a long train, naturally. Not too much lace, but just enough. It was pretty. I have to admit. And it wasn’t one of them super expensive ones. So that was good. We were all happy about that. We all chipped in a little to help her pay for it. Family sticks together you know.
So, yeah, that lace wedding gown with long train, it’s a whole thing. A big production. Lots of choices. Lots of money. But in the end, it’s about the girl feeling happy on her wedding day. And if that dress makes her happy, well, then I guess it’s worth it. Even if it is just a dress she’ll wear once. I reckon she can do what she wants with the dress after. Sell it maybe. I don’t know what people do with these dresses after.
But I still think, the most important thing is the love. The dress is just extra. As long as she’s marrying a good man, that’s all that really matters. The dress is just the icing on the cake, as they say. And if she’s happy and he’s happy, well, that’s all that this old lady cares about. A wedding gown is just a dress after all. But that lace sure is popular these days. Everyone’s got lace on their dress.
